Making Progress

Your attitude about your martial arts training will have everything to do with how much you enjoy your training and make progress. Each student makes their own contribution to the “spirit” of the school. Your demeanor within the school is important! Conduct yourself with respect and compassion for yourself and others. Expect the same.

You must make training enjoyable or you will not keep at it. You must also make it a high priority in your life or your training will take a back seat to other things and before long, you will have given up on your goals of fitness, self discipline, calmness and learning self defense.

You must make training in martial arts fit in with the rest of your life. Family responsibilities and your job or education needs must come first. Don’t push these priorities aside for martial arts or you will soon “burn out.”

To make consistent progress, be realistic about how many classes you can attend per week. Make it a priority and then take action. Many students mistake their “ideal situation” for what is realistically possible. Perhaps at some time in your life it was possible for you to train eight hours a week. Now it may be possible for you to train only two hours a week. This may be less than your ideal situation, but still very result producing if you use that time wisely and consistently. Don’t waste time trying to turn back the clock. Work with the actual circumstances of your life. Many students of this school have made excellent progress even though they could only attend one class a week. Train at home too!

Be patient! Rome wasn’t built in a day and you won’t learn Kung Fu that fast either!

Set goals, and then do what needs to be done to reach them.

Be flexible. If things don’t go exactly as you planned and predicted, adapt and shift gears to fit the new reality and continue on.

Remember the story of the Tortoise and the Hare? Keep on training and the benefits and skill will come!

Every student should put together a school notebook when they join the school. Use it to keep your requirements and goals for fitness and Wing Chun training. Keep notes and tips that will help you understand the Kung Fu.

Finally, you must make a real commitment with yourself for learning, personal change, performance and training. You will need to make that commitment and then remake it, reaffirm it and continue to make it real. Otherwise, your commitment and your goals will fade and disappear. Take your goals and aspirations seriously. Your life must be important to you; act like it!

Your Student Card and Review Sheets

After becoming a member of the Greenlake Martial Arts School, you will have your own student card kept on the front desk. New students start in the Basic level and will have a white card throughout their time in the Basic and White Sash level. Your student card displays your name, picture and lists your most current promotion date. It also shows your review progress. On the back of the card there is a list all the requirements within your level.

The testing, or “review” process is quite different and unique to the Tsun Jo Wing Chun® system. It is designed to make sure you are proficient at each and every one of your requirements before you are promoted to the next level.

Review is initiated by submitting a “Review Sheet.” Take a blank review sheet from the black filing box on the wall near the office, write your name and today’s date at the top and then proceed to fill in the requirements you feel comfortable reviewing, or “testing” on with the help of your student card. Your student card can be found at the office near the review sheets.

Place your filled out review sheet back into the black filing box in the second slot marked “Pending Review.” You are allowed to review on up to ten requirements a month. After submitting a review sheet, come in for open training and ask to be reviewed. If you demonstrate the requirements correctly, they are initialed and recorded on the back of your student card. If a requirement still needs work, the instructor will write down suggestions for improvement for future testing.

You are responsible for your own progress. Do not hesitate to fill out a review sheet once a month. Even if there are not ten moves you feel comfortable testing on, with the space remaining, put down some moves in which you need clarification. At least you will get some feedback or a brief explanation of what the move is for future training.

After the review session is complete and the instructor has finished filling out your review sheet, they will hand it back to you. You should keep each review sheet in a notebook with your level requirements, written tests and any notes you take during class. Over the course of your training, they will become a very useful tool in maintaining consistent progress and working through particular sticking points in the advanced levels.

Private lessons are an excellent way to accelerate progress and become increasingly important once you reach the advanced levels (green sash and up). Talk to any of the instructors during class for rates and to schedule a time.
